Sunrise over the abandoned village Another crazy early morning, we are getting up at 4 a.m., skipping breakfast again to save time. Who would have been hungry for breakfast yet anyway? This morning Evo takes me to an almost entirely abandoned village in the Rhodope Mountains. At its peak time, 60 people of Turkish origin lived here, planting tobacco and farming for a living. Today less than 30 remain. The others moved to the towns of Bulgaria or even abroad.
A morning hike to some waterfalls Today we won’t make long car rides, but stay a little closer to home. We start the day with a lovely breakfast at Evo’s place before getting ready for the day’s first hike. Not a hike like last year’s Rila Seven Lakes tour. Just a short one. Over some fields and along a river that cascades further upstream down some lovely small waterfalls. Evo assured me that I could do it in my sport
The start of a new journey I am back in Bulgaria, traveling through the Rhodope and Pirin Mountains with the photographer Evo Danchev. If you followed me along the Off the beaten track adventure from last year, you have heard that name before. Yes, I turned every stone over after returning back to Norway, to find some extra spare days to combine them into another holiday in Bulgaria. Now I am finally back. Of course, I got a little nervous
Sofia, Monday, June, 25, 2018 Do I have to go now? My last day of this fantastic tour has come – but there is no time to be sad right now, there are still some more hours left! For the moment I am snuggling back into my bed, trying to keep warm. It has been so freaking cold in this hut tonight, even four wool blankets could not keep me warm. A knock on my door, the others are already downstairs
